A heuristic evaluation of LinkedIn's job-seeking experience for 49M weekly job seekers — mapping 8 critical violations to Nielsen's 10 Heuristics and 8 foundational UX design laws, with structured before/after redesigns and a working prototype.
53.5% of job seekers are dissatisfied — and Easy Apply ends in silence
LinkedIn serves 1B+ users worldwide and 49M weekly job seekers, but the moment someone hits "Easy Apply," the experience goes dark — no tracker, no status, no next step. I ran a structured heuristic evaluation across the full flow — homepage, search, filtering, apply, and post-apply — to find out exactly where and why the experience breaks.

Process
Heuristic evaluation across the real flow, not a redesign wishlist
I audited actual screens across four phases — Jobs homepage, search & filtering, the 3-step Easy Apply form, and the post-apply confirmation — flagging every friction point against Nielsen's 10 Usability Heuristics and 8 foundational UX laws (Hick's, Miller's, Fitts's, Jakob's, Tesler's, the Peak-End Rule, the Law of Prägnanz, and the Doherty Threshold). Each issue below is ranked by severity, not by how easy it would be to fix.
Application Black HolePost-apply · Critical

Wall-of-Text Job DescriptionsBrowsing · Medium
9/10
Information Overload, Jobs HomepageDiscovery · Critical
5+ promotional carousels stacked vertically bury the search bar, causing decision paralysis before users even begin searching.
Violates H8 Aesthetic & Minimalist Design, H6 Recognition over Recall, Hick's & Miller's Law
Fix: search bar top → Top 3 Matches → 1 network nudge → 2 filter pills only
03 · CRITICAL · 8/10
Inconsistent Apply Button Labeling
4 CTA variants — "Easy Apply," "Apply," a silent redirect, and "Apply on Company Site" — with no visual hierarchy or outcome preview.
Violates H4 Consistency & Standards, H1 Visibility of System Status, Jakob's & Tesler's Law
Fix: single primary "Easy Apply (3 steps · ~2 min)" button; company-site link as text-only
04 · HIGH · 8/10
Filter Friction — Hidden Behind Modal
All filters buried in a full-screen modal with 12+ options. No saved presets, no smart defaults — resets every session.
Violates H6 Recognition over Recall, H7 Flexibility & Efficiency, Fitts's & Hick's Law
Fix: top 3 filters as inline chips + 1-tap saved presets that persist across sessions
05 · HIGH · 7/10
100+ Applicants — No Competitive Context
Raw applicant count shown with no match score, so qualified candidates self-select out. Competitive insight is paywalled behind Premium.
Violates H2 Match System & Real World, H5 Error Prevention, Jakob's & Peak-End
Fix: "Your profile matches 78% — you're competitive," free, plus a network-insight nudge
06 · HIGH · 7/10
No Progress Indicator in Easy Apply
The multi-step form shows no step counter and no time estimate — users abandon mid-way with no idea how far remains.
Violates H1 Visibility of System Status, H7 Flexibility & Efficiency, Tesler's & Doherty Threshold
Fix: "Step 2 of 3" counter + progress bar on every screen, plus a time estimate up front
07 · MEDIUM · 9/10
Wall-of-Text Job Descriptions
800+ word unstructured job descriptions, no AI summary, no skill tags — mobile users on commutes can't scan listings quickly.
Violates H8 Aesthetic & Minimalist, H2 Match System & Real World, Miller's Law & Law of Prägnanz
Fix: AI 3-bullet "Why this role" summary + scannable skill chips above the fold
08 · MEDIUM · 7/10
No Undo/Withdraw After Applying
The withdraw option is buried 4 taps deep, with no immediate undo on the confirmation screen for accidental applications.
Violates H3 User Control & Freedom, H5 Error Prevention, Tesler's Law & Peak-End Rule
Fix: "Withdraw Application" on the confirmation screen with a 30-minute countdown
Redesign
Before → after, on the four highest-leverage screens
Full UI/UX recommendations spanned clarity & hierarchy (WCAG AA contrast, max 7 items per section, single primary CTA) and friction reduction (1-tap saved search presets, full auto-fill with edit preview, immediate Kanban tracker updates). The four changes below carry the most weight.
Before — Application Tracker
Checkmark + upsell. No pipeline, no status, no undo option visible.
After — Application Tracker
Kanban tracker (Applied → In Review → Interviewing → Offer) pinned to the Jobs tab + a confirmation card with a 30-minute undo.
Before — Jobs Tab Homepage
5+ stacked carousels; search bar buried. Promoted content mixes with organic with no visual distinction.
After — Jobs Tab Homepage
Search bar top → Top 3 Matches with % → one network nudge → two filter pills only.
Before — Apply CTA Hierarchy
Four button variants — Easy Apply, Apply, Apply ↗, Apply on Company Site — with no hierarchy.
After — Apply CTA Hierarchy
"Easy Apply (3 steps · ~2 min)" as a single primary button. Company Site as a text-link only.
Before — Progress Indicator
0% progress bar barely visible. No step count anywhere — users never know how many steps remain.
After — Progress Indicator
"Step 2 of 3" counter + a visible progress bar throughout, plus a time estimate before entry.
Differentiators — AI match badge, job-detail AI summary, saved filter presets, withdraw UX.
Prototype
A working redesign, not just a deck
I rebuilt the core "Easy Apply" job-search flow as a live, clickable prototype to validate the redesign decisions above — consistent CTA hierarchy, a visible step indicator, and an application tracker that replaces the post-apply black hole.
